This course builds on knowledge of the properties and components of oral language by exploring factors that impact one’s language acquisition and development based on the current research. Features of typical and atypical language development are also discussed and research surrounding effective interventions are analyzed. The course concludes by analyzing the oral language-literacy connection and examining disparities among children entering school and other inequities in literacy. Each topic is set in the framework of understanding how one’s knowledge of these areas should drive educational policy.
