Requirements

History majors are required to take 40 credits of historical offerings beyond the core requirement. Please note that courses which apply to multiple categories may only fulfill one category. The following must be included in the course selections:

History of Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America

At least 4 credits each from three of the following five categories:

Public History and Museum Studies

Note:

The remainder of the major requirement consists of twelve credits of history electives.

Majors anticipating graduate study in history are encouraged to elect additional history courses as well as to develop relevant language and research skills. History majors are strongly encouraged to pursue intermediate-level language study in French, German, Italian, Greek or Latin.

Eight elective credits toward the history major may be fulfilled by language courses beyond the core requirement, either at the intermediate level of the core language or at the introductory level of a second language.

Early Christianity

The concentration (for history majors) and minor (for non-history majors) in Early Christianity introduces students to the world of the early church.  The program provides a historical context for the growth and global spread of Christianity and equips students with the analytical and language skills to pursue research on early Christian texts.

Requirements

Choose at least 12 credits from the following courses.  At least 8 credits should be history courses.

Public History and Museum Studies Concentration

History majors interested in careers in museum education, museum administration, collections management, artifact conservation, archival and curatorial positions, as well as the growing field of history-related mass media and technology may complete a concentration in Public History and Museum Studies with courses listed below. Entry level positions in above fields may be attained by students with a bachelor’s degree. Specific requirements for a minor for non-history majors are described under Interdisciplinary and Off-Campus Curriculum. Contact Professor David Goss, History Department.
