Social Studies Minor

The social studies minor is open to all students. It may be of particular interest to students interested in teaching K-12 social studies, as course offerings offer opportunity to gain both depth and breadth of knowledge of social studies topics aligned subject matter knowledge guidelines established for teacher preparation by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Early Childhood and Elementary majors interested in learning about how to add on the History/Social Science (1-6) license should talk with their Education advisor. Students interested in completing a licensure program in Middle/Secondary History and Social Science or Middle School Humanities should contact the graduate-education@gordon.edu to learn more about pathways to licensure.

Students may choose one of three tracks, according to their interest:

  • Elementary Social Studies: This track is particularly appropriate for Early Childhood and Elementary Education majors.
  •  Middle/Secondary School Social Science: This track is particularly appropriate for individuals interested in teaching History/Social Science (grades 5-12). It offers the opportunity to build a stronger foundation of subject matter knowledge before working on licensure through a master’s program.
  • Middle School Humanities: This track is particularly appropriate for English majors interested in teaching Humanities (grades 5-8). It offers the opportunity to build a stronger foundation of subject matter knowledge before working on licensure through a master’s program.
