Special Education Minor (PreK-2 or PreK-8)

The special education minor is open to students from any department on campus interested in advocating for students with disabilities within a broad array of settings, such as schools, clinical practice, or ministry. Requires a minimum of 20 credits, including 9 credits of required coursework. Those seeking licensure as a Teacher of Moderate Disabilities (PK-2 or PK-8) must also earn a bachelor’s degree in early childhood or elementary education and meet all licensure requirements, as outlined below.

Licensure for Education Majors

Licensure Courses

The student seeking licensure as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-2 or PreK-8) must also earn a Bachelor’s degree in early childhood or elementary education and pass the MTELs in Communication and Literacy Skills, Foundations of Reading, and either Early Childhood (PreK-2) or General Curriculum (PreK-8). The student is required to maintain a 2.70 cumulative GPA and earn a C or better in education classes. In consultation with the academic advisor, students choose core humanities, social science and natural science options to meet licensure requirements as defined by the Herschend School of Education. The student must apply for acceptance into the licensure program during the sophomore year and must meet licensure requirements for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the time of program completion. An SEI endorsement course is required. The College reserves the right to alter licensure program requirements as necessary to remain in compliance with Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education licensure standards.

Elective Options for Non-Licensure

Any student completing the special education minor without licensure will choose 11 or more credits from the courses below. No more than one human development or behavior course may apply to the minor.

Internships from other departments may apply with pre-approval from the School of Education and must contain at least one special education learning goal.
