History (B.A.)

Requirements


History majors are required to take 40 credits of historical offerings beyond the core requirement. Please note that courses which apply to multiple categories may only fulfill one category. The following must be included in the course selections:

One of the following (4 credits)


 

At least 4 credits each from three of the following five categories:


 

Public History and Museum Studies


 

Note:


The remainder of the major requirement consists of twelve credits of history electives.

Majors anticipating graduate study in history are encouraged to elect additional history courses as well as to develop relevant language and research skills. History majors are strongly encouraged to pursue intermediate-level language study in French, German, Italian, Greek or Latin.

Eight elective credits toward the history major may be fulfilled by language courses beyond the core requirement, either at the intermediate level of the core language or at the introductory level of a second language.

Early Christianity


The concentration (for history majors) and minor (for non-history majors) in Early Christianity introduces students to the world of the early church.  The program provides a historical context for the growth and global spread of Christianity and equips students with the analytical and language skills to pursue research on early Christian texts.

Requirements


Choose at least 12 credits from the following courses.  At least 8 credits should be history courses.

Languages


Required Language (8 credits): Two semesters of one relevant ancient language (Koine Greek, Latin, Syriac).

Public History and Museum Studies Concentration


History majors interested in careers in museum education, museum administration, collections management, artifact conservation, archival and curatorial positions, as well as the growing field of history-related mass media and technology may complete a concentration in Public History and Museum Studies with courses listed below. Entry level positions in above fields may be attained by students with a bachelor’s degree. Double Major with Middle School and Secondary Education


Requirements


Students seeking licensure in Massachusetts as a teacher of history or social studies at the middle school and secondary education level (grades 5 - 12) should take HIS 232 - America 1492-1846 , HIS 234 - America 1846-1941 , HIS 237 - America 1941-Present  , GEG 210 - Principles of Geography  , and either HIS 378 - Evolution and Society  or HIS 495 - Advanced Seminar: Ancient History  (ancient science topic).
