Requirements

History majors are required to take 36 credits of historical offerings beyond the core requirements. The following must be included in the course selections:

HIS 492 - Colloquium in Historiography Credits: 4

History of Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America

HIS 240 - Christianity and the Modern World: A Historical View Credits: 4
HIS 245 - History of Africa Credits: 4
HIS 250 - History of Latin America Credits: 4
HIS 341 - Eastern Europe, Byzantium and the Caucasus Credits: 4
HIS 344 - Medieval Islam and the Middle East Credits: 4
HIS 371 - Selected Topics Credits: 2-4 (if appropriate topic)

The remainder of the major requirement consists of eight credits of history electives.

Majors anticipating graduate study in history are encouraged to elect additional history courses as well as to develop relevant language and research skills. History majors are strongly encouraged to pursue intermediate-level language study in French, German, Italian, Greek or Latin.

Public History and Museum Studies Concentration

History majors interested in careers in museum education, museum administration, collections management, artifact conservation, archival and curatorial positions, as well as the growing field of history-related mass media and technology may complete a concentration in Public History and Museum Studies with courses listed below. Entry level positions in above fields may be attained by students with a bachelor’s degree. Requirements

Students seeking licensure in Massachusetts as a teacher of history or social studies at the middle school or secondary education level should take HIS 232 - America 1492–1846 , HIS 234 - America 1846–1941 , HIS 237 - America 1941–Present , GEG 210 - Principles of Geography , and either HIS 378 - Evolution and Society or HIS 495 - Advanced Seminar: Ancient History (ancient science topic).

It is recommended that students seeking licensure at the elementary level take HIS 232 - America 1492–1846 , HIS 234 - America 1846–1941 , and HIS 237 - America 1941–Present .
