Black Studies Minor

The Black Studies Minor will offer courses drawing on multiple disciplinary perspectives, mainly as they apply to the American experience of persons of African descent.  Courses in theology, history, sociology, literature and the arts will introduce students to understanding the role of institutions and social movements in history and in contemporary society in shaping race-based advantage and disadvantage in US society.  Students will reflect on the concepts of race and ethnicity to gain conceptual and practical skills for the mastery of intercultural competence necessary to move towards an equitable and inclusive society.  While the Black experience will remain central to studies in the minor, it will enable the student to find parallels in the lives of native peoples, Latin and Hispanic Americans and Asian-Americans in US society.
