Data Science Minor

The data science minor, along with a suitable major, will prepare students for graduate level study and entry level positions in data science and data analysis.

Students will develop competency in:

Programming in a computer language used in data science work. Currently this means the ability to work in Python and/or R;
Statistical thinking and mathematical modeling;
The use of machine learning software tools;
Data management and the overall data science process, through project experience.

Requirements

CPS 121 - Introduction to Programming Credits: 4
CPS 330 - Machine Learning Credits: 4
DSC 210 - Introduction to Data Science Credits: 4
DSC 340 - Data Science Project Credits: 4 or approved 4-credit internship

Statistics Options

One of the following statistics courses:

ECB 211 - Statistics in Business and Economics Credits: 4
MAT 220 - Biostatistics Credits: 4
MAT 319 - Statistics Credits: 4
PSY 256 - Research Methods I Credits: 4

Elective

One of the following 4 credit options:

BIO 440 - Advanced Techniques in Ecology Credits: 2 or 4 (4-credit option required)
CPS 352 - Database Systems Credits: 4
ECB 313 - Econometrics Credits: 4
PSY 257 - Research Methods II Credits: 4
Other course approved by minor advisor
