Program Description
The fundamental aim of public health is to improve the health and well being of communities around the world. Thus, its pursuit can take many forms, including leading health promotion efforts, studying disease trends, identifying policies to promote health equity and managing health systems to facilitate access to care.
In contrast to clinical medicine, which focuses on the treatment of one patient at a time, public health leverages theories and practice to positively impact populations or groups of people. These approaches have far-reaching effects to prevent disease and improve quality of life. In fact, many practitioners in clinical medicine find important value in pairing their medical degree with a public health perspective.
Public health students enter programs with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. They generally pursue a broad array of topics, such as epidemiology, social determinants of health, statistics and health policy, and then focus their interest areas through additional coursework and applied learning. Interdisciplinary learning occurs through analysis and action and leads to understanding efficient and effective solutions for improving health among communities worldwide.
The Master of Public Health (MPH) program at Gordon College equips its graduates with general knowledge about all aspects of the field while also providing opportunities to specialize in areas of interest. Specifically, the concentrations offered at Gordon are among the fastest growing sectors of public health and associated with some of the highest paying job opportunities for its graduates, making it an outstanding value. Further, aligning with the College’s mission, the M.P.H. at Gordon emphasizes leadership development and global reach, all from a Christian worldview. This is a 45-credit hour program.
